Retail sales impact table numbers don't add up

[edit]

If you multiply the number of shoppers by the average spent, the product is much higher than the numbers in the total spent column for the years before 2017 (2005-2014).

Are the numbers copied directly from the NRF data? Where can the data for these years be found? The surveys are also preliminary, i.e. they are asking people if they plan to shop on Black Friday, and how much they are planning to spend. Are some numbers from the survey and some from actual retail results? Sardtok (talk) 09:59, 16 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Army / Navy game?

[edit]

The New York Times just did an article on this and it apparently claims that the origin of the term was by police in Philadelphia but that it was about the Army/Navy game played on Saturday after Thanksgiving. This does not seem logical, since Saturday traffic wouldn’t affect Friday.

< https://www.nytimes.com/2024/11/27/business/black-friday-shopping-cyber-monday.html#:~:text=Black%20Friday%20got%20its%20start,on%20the%20Saturday%20after%20Thanksgiving. >

Also there’s a missing opening quotation mark in the following sentence:

In response to incidents at branches of Tesco, Greater Manchester Police's deputy chief constable Ian Hopkins said shoppers had behaved in an "appalling" fashion, and criticized shops for not making adequate security arrangements to ensure the safety of customers."

I was going to the source to see about correcting it but it requires registration. Maybe someone else would be willing to do it.

And can somebody change Auto Archiver so that it goes longer than 90 days? That doesn’t make sense. 2600:1700:4E10:C690:8C0F:644F:DEB6:E652 (talk) 00:54, 29 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

"Black Friday around the world" section

[edit]

This section contained a lot of unsourced material. I removed the ones that simply said "Black Friday was first observed in <country> in 2014" and added {{Citation needed}} to others, but I personally don't like the section at all as of now. The selection of countries was and is still pretty random. Listing the countries by their continent doesn't make sense; the list should really only contain the countries on which Black Friday has really had a notable impact, or maybe just the continents generally (which would make most sense for Europe). Or maybe we should delete the section altogether and incorporate the info into other sections? NaThanD 312 (talk) 22:27, 29 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
