Adelaide Meetup is a periodic gathering of Wikipedians and other Wikimedians from Adelaide and surrounding areas to discuss their experiences with the project and foster collegiality between local editors. It is organised by participants of WikiProject Adelaide. The inaugural meeting was held on 21 August 2006, and the list below provides a list of past events and a summary of their outcomes.

In 2014 a series of monthly meetings were held, with guest speakers invited to present their views on how Wikipedia articles on South Australian topics could be improved. One edit-a-thon was held, but due to low attendance, meetings since that time have been held at irregular intervals.

(For a list of future Adelaide Meetups, see Wikipedia:Meetup/Adelaide/Future meetings. This page includes a section: A "how to" guide for setting up a Meeting.)

Meetup 1 - 21 August 2006

[edit]
There were computers so we did a tiny bit of editing!

The inaugural Adelaide Meetup was held at the Brougham Place Uniting Church in North Adelaide on the 21 August 2006. The attendees were Alex Sims, Paul Foord, Peripitus, Auswide.

Topics discussed:

  • Our first edit of Wikipedia
  • Edit Counts
  • Our disappointment at not having any administrators present
  • Our areas of interest (i.e. images, vandals, ...)
  • Watchlists
  • Using Mediawiki as a content management system
  • Controversial articles
  • No decision taken on next meeting

Meetup 2 - 23 April 2007

[edit]

The second Adelaide Meetup was held at Zuma Caffe in the Adelaide Central Market on 23 April 2007. The attendees included Wikipedia-founder Jimmy Wales and Adelaidean editors Adrian J. Hunter, Alex Sims, Auswide, Blnguyen, CJ, Daniel, Derek Munneke, Janet Hawtin, Michael, Paul Foord, Peripitus, Riana, James Williams, Pru Mitchell, Michael Patkin, Paul Foord ...(list incomplete).

Topics discussed:

  • WikiCensus
  • Religious factions
  • Biographies of living persons
  • Bureaucracy
  • Watchlist envy (or pity)

Meetup 3 - 16 February 2008

[edit]
'Mostly' everyone quickly giving a smile for the camera.

The third Adelaide Meetup was held at Billy Baxter's in Citi Cross Arcade in Rundle Mall on 16 February 2008. The users that attended the meeting were James, Janet, Mark, Peripitus, Riana, Scott, and {Placeholder}.

Things discussed: (in no particular order)

  • areas we like to edit in
  • featured items - how standards have risen for FAs, FPs
  • whether you can shoot an FP using a 300 dollar camera
  • Wikidrama, love of bureaucracy, "exciting" editors
  • watchlists and self-control
  • How the end out from this meeting compared to other meetings
  • Different operating systems, Windows vs open source, Mark's idea for one OS to rule them all...
  • Scratching our heads at User:Blnguyen/WikiGDP, turning it upside down and inside out, and wishing Blnguyen was there to help us out
  • WP:OWN
  • WP:NPOV
  • Silly vandalism
  • Notability policy - too much of a good thing?
  • Ideas for next meetup other than the usual meeting. (Wikipedia Paintball Meetup or gokarts :-)
  • Portal:South Australia

? - 20 April 2008

[edit]

Meetup 4 - 15 January 2011 - WP10

[edit]
Everyone quickly giving a smile for one of the many cameras present

The fourth Adelaide Meetup was held at Scoozi in Rundle Street on 15 January 2011. The users that attended the meeting were Alex Sims, Bilby, Adrian J. Hunter, Pru Mitchell, Bahudhara, PDethBW and Pingku.

Things discussed: (in no particular order)

  • Ideas for Wikimedia funding spend:
    • A WEA Course - Writing for Wikipedia
    • Year 12 projects
  • What can you do with a $200 microgrant?
    • Buy some books
    • a digital camera
  • How to mentor new editors
  • We noted that having Jimbo attracted many more editors than free pizza.
  • Simple Wikipedia
  • Workshops for new editors
  • Backstage passes - where to - how do we organise these?
  • Articles about big things
  • Emu War
  • Most hits on an article I contributed to mainly - Big Orange (South Australia) was the clear winner

Meetup 5 - 12 June 2011

[edit]

As Liam Wyatt was in Adelaide for a short time, we thought it would be nice to see if we could run a short-notice meetup, as it should be fun. Thus we're meeting at 6pm, Sunday 12 June 2011 at Bruneli's on Rundle Street (down the Rundle Mall end, just past the entrance to the big car park that has Hungry Jacks under it). There are some suggestions of beer afterwards, which would be a good thing.

Meetup 6 - 18 February 2012

[edit]

The first proposed date for Meetup #6 in November 2011 attracted no interest, so February 2012 was chosen instead. Very few editors attended, possibly because 11 am on Saturday is not a very convenient time.

Meetup 7 - 22 November 2012 / 27 January 2013

[edit]

The Meetup was originally scheduled for 22 November 2012, but this turned out to be another poorly attended event. It seems that holding impromptu meetings at short notice is not likely to attract many editors.

Despite this the Meetup was rescheduled for 27 January 2013, and this time the event attracted more participants, established editors with a broad spectrum of common interests. Bahudhara (talk) 05:38, 4 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

ArtAndFeminism 2014

As we realised that there is so much that is needed to be done, we decided to start on the Tjilbruke article first and to try to develop it to FA status. We also discussed how best to get guidance from experts, and how to incorporate this into WP article development.

It was an informal celebratory meetup following Majoran's regular Friday open house. Around 10 Wikipedia editors, Hackerspace Adelaide members and newcomers shared pizza and beer thanks to Wikimedia Australia and watched their edits happening live as Wikipedia-generated music and images projected on a wall.
